HEALTH authorities have revealed a spike in deadly mesothelioma rates in the area around an old asbestos factory in Melbourne’s west, after 16 people in the area were found to have died from the disease. VICTORIA’S environment watchdog was told deadly asbestos had contaminated public land and a waterway around a Sunshine North factory in 1996, but did not order anybody to clean it up.
