A woman died of an asbestos-related cancer which she may have contracted from dust on her father’s work overalls decades before as a child. An inquest heard 59-year-old Julie Elizabeth Lawless, of Wrights Lane, Torquay, Devon died on New Year’s Eve 2015 from mesothelioma.

Sydney Bridge Asbestos Stokes Concerns

Workers on a famous bridge in Sydney unexpectedly found asbestos under concrete slabs earlier this year, and some government officials are questioning why they didn’t find out for nearly 10 months. A crew on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which carries vehicular traffic, a rail line and pedestrian and cycling lanes over Sydney Harbour, reportedly discovered the asbestos while removing a toll booth in February 2016.

The scientists at Adelaide’s Flinders University have found that malignant mesothelioma tumours are able to transform into blood vessels, promoting their own growth. “Instead of waiting for the outside of the tissue to grow blood vessels in, the tumour cells themselves branch out, growing blood vessels that reach out into surrounding tissues, tapping into the native vasculature,” she said.
